A 47-year-old ex-police officer, who started working as a dentist in Pennsylvania has been charged with raping an unconscious patient while she was under anesthesia.

The offender, Wade Newman served as a State College police officer from 1991 to 1994 before he shifted into his dentistry career. He has been the executive officer of Bellefonte Family Density for about 17 years and previously served as the president of the Pennsylvania Dental Association.

Newman was arrested on Friday on a slew of felony charges, including rape of an unconscious person, kidnapping and sexual assault in addition to two misdemeanors.

The suspect allegedly drove a woman home following a procedure on October 18 and the raped her while she was unconscious.

The woman reported the rape and during an investigation, Newman confessed to police that he was attracted to the victim and tried to have sex with her after a dental procedure.

According to a section on the Pennsylvania dentistry’s website touts the benefits of going under sedation, particularly for those already scared to get their teeth checked.

“Everyone can benefit from Sedation and Sleep Dentistry. Over 35 million Americans have some kind of anxiety when it comes to going to the dentists,” the site reads. “Unlike conscious sedation dentistry techniques, general anesthesia puts you into a deep sleep during your procedure. While using this type of sedative dentistry, you cannot be easily awakened until after the effects wear off.

Currently, Newman is being held in Lieu prison on $one million bond.
